Coach's Advantage (Ed. 4)
Sharpening the Habits That Win Games
This week is all about sharpening the habits that win games—building confident shooters, tightening defensive discipline, and helping your team reset mentally after a tough loss. You’ll also get a zone quick-hitter you can plug in immediately when you need a quality look. Let’s lock in and keep stacking the small edges that separate good teams from great ones.
Play: Quick Hitters 2–3 Zone
This simple zone-buster creates an easy scoring opportunity for your post by stretching the defense early. Start by placing your shooter in the ball-side corner to widen the zone. As the ball is entered, set a strong screen on the middle defender to free your post on the block.
The key is forcing the zone to shift and setting solid, physical screens. And make sure your shooter is ready—this player isn’t just a decoy but a legitimate scoring option if the defense collapses.
Drill: 4-on-3 — Shooting and Defense
This variation of UCLA Drill trains your offense to move the ball quickly and knock down shots under pressure, with defenders flying at them on every catch. With only three defenders guarding four perimeter players, the offense must make sharp reads, deliver extra passes, and shoot confidently against hard closeouts.
Defensively, the drill demands urgency. Players must scramble, communicate, and cover space with purpose—habits that translate directly into game-winning defensive possessions.
Mental: Resetting Your Mind After a Tough Loss
Resetting after a tough loss is essential. It prevents players and coaches from carrying frustration into the next practice or game and allows everyone to refocus on growth and improvement. A proper reset keeps confidence intact, reinforces a growth mindset, and opens the door for clear, forward-thinking adjustments instead of emotional reactions.
Great coaching often shows up in the quiet moments—adjusting, learning, and modeling the right response for your players. As John Wooden said, “Failure is never fatal. But failure to change might be.”
